Squint, and you’ll see it.

So close, yet so far.

Keep trying!

So, in my recent stumbling online, I found that Disney will be making yet another attempt to revive their animation studio in a more ‘classic’ venue. The Princess and The Frog is a story that IMDB describes as “A fairy tale centered on a young girl named Princess Tiana who lives in New Orleans’ French Quarter during the Jazz Age.” There are a couple of reasons why I am intrigued by this movie.

  1. New Orleans’ during the Jazz Age is ripe with Voodoo. Always has been, always will be. The main antagonist seems to be centered around a character by the name of Dr. Facilier, a ‘bad voodoo’ priest. This sticks out in my mind mainly due to the main focus of Louisiana Voodoo today. Voodoo today is used mainly to serve others and influence the outcome of life events through the connection with nature, spirits, and ancestors. True rituals are held “behind closed doors” as a showy ritual would be considered disrespectful to the spirits. Voodoo methods include readings, spiritual baths, specially devised diets, prayer, and personal ceremony. Will this movie ‘hurt’ the voodoo community, or open up doors that are prior closed to the public.
  2. The French Quarter during the Jazz Period of New Orleans was one of the most influential times in regards to race, religion and sex. I mean, the opposite to the antagonist voodoo priest Dr. Facilier, Mama Odie, seems to be more along the lines of the ‘good’ side of the story. Should be interesting on how Disney picks particular battles in regards to this movie. Hopefully it’ll open more doors than it’ll close.
  3. I’m not a voodoo practicioner, but I am certainly facinated by the ideas and mentalities of the influence of religion on people. I mean, I really believe that if a person believes in something firmly enough, it is bound to happen.
